In an economic climate that fiddles with orchestral downsizing and downright disbanding, the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players is doing something remarkable: filling seats.
The group will once again fill seats as the Ashe County Arts Council presents “It's De-Lovely” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, at the Ashe Civic Center.
The program repertoire will include music of American songwriter icon Cole Porter and will feature acclaimed vocalist Martha Bassett.
The group will perform classics such as “Night and Day,” “Begin the Beguine,” “It's De-Lovely” and “I've Got You Under My Skin.”
The Carolina Chamber Symphony Players, aka the Carolina Chamber Symphony, was founded in 1992 by Robert Franz and a group of fellow musicians from the North Carolina School of the Arts.
Franz served as artistic director and conductor of the orchestra for 10 years. During the past 16 seasons, the orchestra and its chamber ensembles have delighted audiences with their artistry and excellence; commissioned and premiered new works by some of the country's most gifted composers; featured guest artists of national renown in performances of chamber music repertoire; and provided exciting music education experiences for students of all ages.
Since Franz's departure in 2002, the orchestra has presented a series of distinguished guest conductors, including Kate Tamarkin, Alfred Sturgis, Robert Chumbley and David Wiley.
In 2006 the organization added “Players” to its name to reflect a growing emphasis on small ensemble performances.
The organization is focused on presenting outstanding chamber ensembles playing music of all genres in intimate settings, while the full orchestra continues to perform and to collaborate with other groups.
The ensemble for It's DeLovely includes Jacqui Carrasco on violin, Matt Kendrick on bass, Federico Pivetta on piano, Wally West on saxophone, Ken Wilmot on trumpet, John Wilson on drums and Bassett on vocals.
During the past decade, Bassett has entertained countless North Carolina audiences with groups such as her popular swing band “Martha and the Moodswingers.” She currently tours full-time with the “Martha Bassett Band,” an Americana/alternative-country group that has opened for Lyle Lovett and played at Merlefest. Her third solo CD is “Sinner's Prayer.”
Matt Kendrick has appeared on bass with artists such as Marian McPartland, Gene Bertoncini, Archie Shepp, Jaki Byard and JoAnne Brackeen, who was a guest star with his group “The Matt Kendrick Unit” at the Carrboro Arts Center. Kendrick has released five CDs and he teaches electric bass and jazz improvisation at Wake Forest University.
Federico Pivetta, a versatile pianist with a unique mastery of both classical and jazz styles, is an active accompanist, chamber musician and teacher. He has performed with jazz greats such as Ernie Watts and Arturo Sandoval.
An associate professor of music and a Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation fellow at Wake Forest University, Jacqui Carrasco has performed and recorded an array of musical styles internationally, from jazz and Argentine tango to avant-garde contemporary music. She is an artistic co-director of the Carolina Summer Music Festival.
John Wilson has performed with artists such as Jon Hendricks, Milt Grayson, Stefon Harris, Chris Potter, and Mark Turner, in addition to playing with the Glen Miller Orchestra and the AS-Is Ensemble. He teaches at Davidson College and actively performs in the Triad.
Wally West has performed across the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, touring, recording and performing with such popular acts as Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops and Natalie Cole, as well as Tony Bennett, Mercer Ellington, Ellis Marsalis and countless other jazz artists. Wally serves as music director and project coordinator for the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop in High Point.
Ken Wilmot is a member of the Winston-Salem and Greensboro symphonies and is a founding member of the Giannini Brass. He has also performed with the New World Symphony and with the Eastern Philharmonic. He has appeared and toured with a variety of popular and jazz artists such as The Four Tops, Ray Charles, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and the Guy Lombardo Orchestra.
Tickets are $12 adults and $5 students and are available at the Ashe Arts Center or by phone at (336) 846-2787. For more information, call (336) 846-2787.
