As Thanksgiving Day arrives, area offices and businesses will close to observe the holiday.

Ashe County government offices, including city and town offices, will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23.

U.S. Post Offices, federal and state offices, the landfill and convenience centers as well as financial institutions will be closed on Thanksgiving Day only, reopening as usual on Friday, Nov. 23.

The Ashe Mountain Times office will also be closed for Thanksgiving Day.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, the Ashe County Public Library will be closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-24, and will re-open on Monday, Nov. 26.

In regards to Ashe County Schools, Wednesday, Nov. 21, is being used as a make-up day, but students will be dismissed early. Elementary schools will dismiss at 11 a.m., middle school at 11:15 a.m. and the high school at 11:30 a.m. Schools will then be closed through Friday, Nov. 23, and will resume on Monday, Nov. 26.

The Friday following Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday and is traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Many non-retail employers have begun allowing employees to have the day off which has increased the number of shoppers on the day.

Shoppers who are still out on the town Friday evening can stop by the Backstreet Park in downtown West Jefferson to enjoy the Hometown Christmas Kick-Off and community tree lighting. The event will begin at 5 p.m.

Santa and friends plan to attend the event and are expected to arrive in an old-fashioned fire engine. For more information about the event, visit http://www.visitwestjefferson.org.
