Beginning Friday, the Ashe Arts Council will once again kick off its summer gallery crawl in downtown West Jefferson, from 5-8 p.m.

“This is the 13th annual Gallery Crawl in downtown West Jefferson,” Executive Director of the Ashe County Arts Council Jane Lonon said. “We are excited to feature seventeen galleries ... and the first crawl of the season is fun and festive with lots of folks strolling the streets, enjoying the latest creations from our creative and talented Ashe County artists.”

Each “crawl” takes place the second Friday of each month, from June through October, and feature new gallery exhibits, special artists, refreshments and in-store promotions.

“The purpose of the crawls are to support and promote downtown West Jefferson businesses,” according to Lonon. “Crawlers will have an opportunity to see new, creative and innovative works by Ashe County’s leading artists.”

West Jefferson’s eclectic mix of shops, galleries and studios represent a little something for everyone and include Acorn Gallery, Ashe Arts Center, Ashe Custom Framing and Gallery, Backstreet Beads, Bohemia Gallery, Broomfields Gallery, Catch Light Gallery, Everything Has a Story, Fiber Artisans’ Studio, Florence Thomas Art School, French’s Art Gallery, Originals Only Gallery, Ripples Gallery, RT Morgan Art Gallery, Shoemaker-Hadley Studio, The Artists’ Theatre  and Tin Roof Gallery and Studio.

“Art lovers will find on the streets of Downtown West Jefferson one of a kind paintings and photography, pottery, stained glass, quilts, fiber arts, jewelry, wood turned art, and much more,” according to a release issued by the Ashe County Arts Council. “Crawlers are invited to stroll the streets, visit the galleries, view the downtown murals, enjoy the many outdoor art pieces and take advantage of the downtown restaurants.”

The Ashe Arts Center will feature the opening reception for the Shadow of the Hills, the annual exhibit of the Blue Ridge Art Clan. The exhibit will showcase 25 artists with over 50 paintings in a variety of media.

Future Gallery Crawls are scheduled for July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 13, and Oct. 11, in addition to a special Christmas Crawl on Dec. 6.
