With summer sun and tourist season just around the corner, it’s all hands on deck at the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce.

On April 29, the Chamber announced extended weekend hours to demonstrate its commitment to area businesses and to better serve tourists.

“For so long, we’ve encouraged businesses to keep their doors open later in the evening, because that’s what visitors have repeatedly asked for,” Chamber Executive Director Cabot Hamilton said. “Several businesses have embraced that idea, and we felt it was the right thing for us to do ourselves.”

And the Chamber Board of Directors is on board with the change, according to Hamilton, authorizing the chamber to keep its doors open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

And that’s where long-time chamber employee Robin Privette comes in, according to Hamilton.

“I’ll be here manning the chamber on Friday evenings and on Saturdays,” Privette said. “I sat down and discussed it with my family, but I’m looking forward to the change. I love to run my mouth, and love to speak with folks here at the chamber, so I’m excited.”

And in some ways, Privette’s experience — she already staffs the chamber on Saturdays — helped encourage Hamilton and the chamber board that extended hours were the right call.

“Several times I’ve had a couple hundred visitors here at the chamber on a Saturday,” Privette said. “The need is there and I’m happy to help.”
