Mount Jefferson State Natural Area has been announced as the featured location to include on this year’s Ashe County Chamber of Commerce ornament.

The idea to feature Mount Jefferson came about through a meeting of the Chamber’s member services committee which works to choose a place of historical significance in the county.

Local artist Bessie Clay serves as the designer for the ornaments which are in their 21st year of production.

“The group gets with Bessie with ideas and determine if it is feasible to make it fit on an ornament,” Kathleen George, the chamber’s administrative assistant, said.

The ornaments will be available for purchase during the annual Christmas in July festival at the chamber’s booth and afterward at the chamber office. The cost is $11.

“Mount Jefferson has been on the list for a long time and Bessie did a great job of capturing the mountain,” Karen Powell of the Chamber board of directors and member services committee, said.

The ornaments serve as a fundraiser for the Chamber, providing monies needed for programming and operating the visitor’s center.

Powell said the ornaments are good for both residents and visitors.

“They remind folks of home and many visitors have purchased the ornaments when visiting the Christmas in July festival,” Powell said. “We hope folks will be pleased with the design. It wouldn’t be what it is without Bessie’s role in it.”

Previous ornaments have featured community icons, including the 1904 Ashe County Courthouse, the New River at Sharpe’s Falls Dam, the Virginia Creeper, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Beaver Creek High School, Ashe Central High School, Northwest Ashe High School, Ashe County’s Bicentennial, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Todd General Store, the old West Jefferson Hotel, Ashe County Cheese, Ashe County Christmas, Cascades, Ashe Memorial Hospital, Ashe County Volunteer Fire Departments, Ashe County Arts Council, Parkway Theater, the old Lansing school, Ashe County Library, Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian and Shatley Springs Restaurant.

The ornaments have featured designs by Clay since the inception. The designs depict iconic buildings and locations in Ashe County.

The chamber has some of the previous ornaments available for sale at a cost of $6 each. Ornaments currently available are the Northwest Ashe High School, AMH, Ashe County VFD, arts council, Parkway Theater, Lansing School, library, Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian and Shatley Springs.
