Alleghany crash kills Jefferson man

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has confirmed that a Sunday evening crash involving a van on N.C. Highway 18 in Alleghany County killed one person and injured several others.
According to the NCHP, Oscar Manolo Mendoza Trejo died as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck.
Charged in the accident was 26-year-old Juan Carlos Mendez Pena with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
All nine passengers in the van had the same Jefferson address.
A NCHP incident report stated the van was travelling south on NC 18, ran off the right side, went airborne, and struck a ditch before coming to rest on its side.
According to the North Carolina Court System, Pena is scheduled to appear in Alleghany County District Court on Jan. 8.
Trooper Kevin Aldridge was not available to provide details on how the crash occurred and an official report has yet to be filed with the NCHP, said the Wilkesboro office.
