A man is dead after being shot by law enforcement officers late Monday in the Laurel Springs area of Ashe County, according to Ashe County Sheriff's Office Capt. Carolyn Gentry.
At about 11 p.m., deputies from the Ashe County Sheriff's Office, along with a West Jefferson Police officer, responded to a report of a shooting from a residence on Gaither Poe Road, Gentry said.
At the scene, officers encountered a white male armed with a high-powered rifle and scope, according to the captain.
The officers identified themselves, and ordered the man to put down his weapon. The man refused, and pointed the weapon at the officers, said Gentry. Officers fired their weapons, striking and killing the subject.
The name of the man who was killed is being withheld at this time, pending notification of the next of kin, Gentry said.
Two officers from the Ashe County Sheriff's Office and one officer from the West Jefferson Police Department have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the completion of the investigation being conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation.
No further information was available at presstime, the captain said, citing the ongoing SBI investigation.
