Citing personnel confidentiality laws, county officials will not offer information concerning the resignation of parks and recreation director Rita Prevette, or the recent termination of several park employees.

Ashe County Manager Pat Mitchell confirmed Thursday that Prevette tendered her resignation last week.

Prevette, who did not return a message seeking comment, will step down from that position on Aug. 17, said Mitchell.

“It is a personnel situation and personnel information is confidential,” said Mitchell.

County officials are now in the process of searching for an interim director and that decision is expected by early next week.

Mitchell would not comment on if the potential replacement currently works within the parks' department.

In Friday, July 27 email to the Ashe Mountain Times, Mitchell confirmed that an unspecified number of park employees were terminated “several weeks ago,” but wouldn't comment further, again citing confidentiality laws.

When asked if the exact number of employees that were terminated were three or four, and if the firings occurred simultaneously, Mitchell said, “cannot discuss any further."
