A Lansing woman died Wednesday night after she allegedly jumped from a moving vehicle near the intersection of West Mill Creek Road and West Sugar Tree Road, according to Ashe County Sheriff James Williams.

In an April 18 interview, Williams confirmed the death of Becky Howell, 27, of Lansing, following a Wednesday night incident where Howell may have jumped from the passenger side of a moving vehicle shortly before 7:20 p.m. Williams did not identify the driver of the vehicle, pending the ACSO's investigation.

"This was originally a highway patrol call, but now the highway patrol is saying (Howell's death) wasn't an automobile accident," said Williams. "It appears she may have jumped from the vehicle while it was moving. They've turned that investigation over to the sheriff's office, but we just got it this afternoon, so it's ongoing."

Investigating Trooper JD Miller could not immediately be reached for comment.
