The West Jefferson Board of Aldermen heard reports from the ABC store and the chief of police during its meeting on Monday, May 6.
Haskell McGuire, ABC board chairman, reported third quarter sales at the ABC store of $315,957. He said this was $2,800 less than the same period last year.
“The store is running smoothly and things are looking good,” McGuire said. “For the fourth quarter during April, it looks like things are turning up and hopefully, we can get back any losses from the third quarter.”
According to McGuire, the town received a distribution from the store of $10,500.
The board also approved capital budget ordinances for the sewer rehab project and the sidewalk improvement project. Both items were approved on the previous fiscal year budgets, but Town Manager Brantley Price said approval must be done when a capital project continues into another fiscal year.
West Jefferson Chief of Police Jeff Rose reported that his department received 223 calls for the month, including 18 arrests on various charges, such as DWI, larceny, assault and drug possession. Other charges filed by West Jefferson police officers included burglary, seven license violations and six other traffic violations.
The board tentatively planned another budget meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23.
Price told the board that he, John Smyre from the Ashe County Farmer’s Market and Jane Lonon of the Ashe County Arts Council will be attending an annual Handmade in America event on May 29 to talk about the successes that West Jefferson has seen with HMA projects in the town.
The Elder Abuse Team also informed the board of an upcoming fundraiser. The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, May 17, in the parking lot owned by Sammy Church.
The West Jefferson Board of Aldermen meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.
