With no filings on Wednesday, the number of candidates for Ashe County commissioner seats stands at seven with a week left.

Larry Rhodes, Gerald Price and Gary Roark are incumbents and each of the Republicans have filed to run.

Those challenging the trio are Democrats Richard Blackburn and Marty Gambill, and Republicans Mickey Pruitt and Ed McClearen.

The filing period closes at noon Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Two of the seats, those collecting the most votes, are awarded four-year terms and the third-highest in votes receives a two-year term.

Voter registration deadline is Friday, April 13, or 25 days prior to the May 8 primary.

One stop absentee voting begins on Thursday, April 19, and ends on Saturday, May 5.
