Last modified: Mar. 14
Youths from 1 to 18 have an opportunity to fish in the Ashe County Pond in Jefferson prior to the first day of fishing season.
Beginning at daylight, around 7 a.m., on Saturday, March 30, Ashe County Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, will host the Annual Youth Trout Derby at the park’s pond.
Prizes will be awarded in different age divisions with groups broken down into 1 to 6-years-old, 7 to 11-years-old and 12 to 18-years old.
Bait and tackle as well as concessions will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. The fishing limit is three trout per person.
Park staff are still working out the details but believe they will be able to offer free Bojangles biscuits until they are gone during the beginning of the derby.
The event is sponsored by Buffalo Hunting and Fishing and Mountain Outfitters.
The park will also host the Annual Easter Egg Hunt from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. Prizes will be awarded. The age groups and egg hunt times are broken down into 18-months-old to 3-years old at 10 a.m., 4 to 6-years-old at 10:30 a.m., 7 to 9-years-old at 11 a.m. and 9 to 11-years-old at 11:30 a.m.
The Easter Bunny is expected to attend the egg hunt to greet area children.
