Sophomore Michael Elliott won the 132-pound weight class at the Class 2-A Midwest Regional wrestling championships Saturday at Piedmont High School.

Elliott won his semifinal and final matches by decision and was joined as a state qualifier by four other Huskies. First-year head coach Mark Maya will also send senior Josh Wineberg, juniors Lucas Miller and William Miller, and senior Dakota Elliott to Greensboro for the state championships Thursday through Saturday.

The top four in each weight class of four regionals statewide advanced to the state meet.

In the team standings, Ashe County finished third with 107 points. Piedmont won the regional with 189 points, followed by North Surry with 165Â1/2.

Michael Elliott improved to 41-8 for the season, defeating Central Davidson's Richie Acord 10-5 in the final after dispatching Piedmont's Michael McLamb 8-2 in the semifinals. He won twice by pin in Friday's bouts.

Wineberg, at 285, suffered his first defeat of the season in the championship, losing a 2-1 decision to East Davidson's Josh White. In the semis, Wineberg (40-1) pinned Noel Helms of West Stokes in the second period. He advanced Friday with a pin in his only match.

The Miller twins were each third-place finishers. At 170, Lucas Miller (33-13) lost his semifinal match by decision but came back to decision Starmount's Michael Wood 4-1 and won by injury default over Levi Slate of North Surry in the third-place match.

At 182, William Miller (24-8) lost his semifinal by decision but rallied back with a 1-0 decision over Starmount's Omar Aguilar and a pin in 1:21 of West Davidson's Josh Shoaf. He had decisioned Aguilar 6-3 for the Mountain Valley Conference championship two weeks earlier.

Dakota Elliott (32-11) finished fourth. He fell in the semifinals by decision, then registered a pin in 4:37 of Salibury's Raylon Coleman, his second win in as many days over Coleman, to reach the third-place match. Elliott lost by 7-5 decision to Steven Bunch of Piedmont.
