Ashe County’s 2013 regular season campaign came to a screeching halt this week with a 66-48 loss to Elkin High in the first round of the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament.
Ashe will now have to wait till the end of this week to see which school they will play in the first round of the 2A State Playoffs.
Ashe County closed out the regular season with a 41-40 loss at home against the West Wilkes Blackhawks on Friday.
The Huskies found themselves trailing by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter, but three clutch 3-pointers by senior Jordan Spell pulled the Huskies back within six points of the Blackhawks.
Spell, however, would foul out with more than four minutes to go in the game, forcing Jonathan Cox and Devan Sheets to step up with some needed baskets for the Huskies.
Trailing 39-36 with less than one minute to play in the game, the Huskies had an opportunity to tie the game after West Wilkes was called for a backcourt violation.
Ashe would later the turn the ball over and were forced to quickly foul to send the Blackhawks to the free-throw line.
West Wilkes connected on its second free throw, extending its lead to 40-36. Cox would soon make his way to the charity stripe to cut the deficit back to three points, but another freebie by the Blackhawks solidified the win.
Friday’s contest was a low scoring affair as both teams struggled to reach double-digit scoring totals until late in the second quarter.
The Blackhawks led 6-4 after the first quarter and 15-11 heading into halftime.
Sheets, Eli Gambill, Anderson Moore and Cullen Ashley provided first half scoring for Ashe.
